The Kernel of the Way / Egolessness
Original term: The Kernel of the Way / Egolessness | Chapter/location: 27 | Chapter start page in the English edition’s table of contents: 531
Definition and core idea
In the final chapter the pattern language is presented as a gate for recovering a way of seeing and building; the ultimate aim is to respond directly and without pretence to reality and to real needs.
Explanation and elaboration
Egolessness can be understood as holding back the urge to show off or to impose a personal style where it conflicts with real conditions. The metaphor of “emptiness” points to readiness to see a situation without prejudgement. A pattern language is a tool for learning, not a set of instructions to be carried out without understanding.
Notes and limits of interpretation

Letting go of the will does not mean indecision or setting aside professional responsibility; humility before the evidence must go together with safety and professional commitment.
